Gaia Caramellino is Assistant Professor in History of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, where she teaches History and Theory of Architecture and, since 2014, coordinates the seminar on 20th century architectural periodicals. Since 2016, she is member of the Committee of the Doctoral Program in “Architecture. History and Project” of the Politecnico di Torino.

Her research address the circulation of models, discourses and ideas between Europe and America, the methodology of the historical research on housing, the study of post-war housing policies, practices, forms and cultures. Between 2010 and 2014 she was the National Coordinator of the research project “Architectures for the middle-classes in Italy, 1950s-1970s”, funded by the Italian MiUR. She has lectured in Canada,  United States, Europe and Japan, where she was Visiting Professor at Kyoto University in 2015. She was awarded several research grants and fellowships (Graham Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, SAH) and was invited as Visiting Scholar at the CCA in Montreal in 2011.

Among her publications are: Europe meets America. William Lescaze, Architect of Modern Housing (2016); Housing the 40.000. Explorations in the Middle Class City, Turin 1945-1980 (co-authored with F. De Pieri and C. Renzoni, 2015), William Lescaze. Un architetto europeo nel New Deal (2010). She co-edited the books Post-War Middle-Class Housing. Models, Construction, Change (2015) and Storie di Case. Abitare l’Italia del boom (2013).
